We have been sent the following message from Graham Sales:
"Hi. I have only just got around to registering on the website and on browsing thru' the list of members I found one who is now sadly deceased, but still listed. Perhaps a short impromptu obituary might be in order?

The name of the Old Boy was K.Y.Ketteridge of Walpole Road Cambridge, who died suddenly in, I believe July 2005, exact date unknown. Although not contemprary with him, I had the priviledge of working with him at Cambridge University Engineering Dept.for several years. We remained good friends, and he left CUED and went to work at a charity for handicapped children in Meldreth, developing and making a variety of aids and toys for the unfortunate children. After he retired, he kept up what was really a small paying hobby of making miniature dolls house type furniture and the last thing I saw of his manufacture was a perfect supermarket trolley, fully steerable, and no more than 3 inches high, true craftsmanship.

I am not sure if I have directed this email to the right area but do hope it is of some use.

Graham J. Sales (1954-59)

We have been advised by his son, Nick Clarke, of the death of Frank Clarke (34 - 39). Nick writes as follows:

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death on May 8th 2007 of Frank Clarke (1934 – 1939).

He has mercifully been released from a long battle with Liver Cancer at the age of 83.
Frank was the only son of Frank and Josephine Clarke (nee Webb).
At the age of 7 he became a Trinity Chorister which heralded an early entry to the world of music.

Jo was well known as the leader of Josephine and her Gypsy Band through the war years in Cambridge and following very much in his parents’ footsteps, Frank played the Double Bass in the Central Band throughout his time in the Royal Air Force.

On leaving the R.A.F as a pilot although mercifully untested in the conflict, he embarked on his musical career. The Stanley Black Orchestra, Ambrose, Ted Heath, Geraldo he played at times with most of the top orchestras of the day. He continued to enhance his growing reputation as a freelance musician throughout the 1950’s, 60’s. and 70’s playing with many top class orchestras and stars of the days including Matt Munro, Frankie Vaughan, Sammy Davis Junior, Ella Fitzgerald, Petula Clark, Cliff Richard on his first record (Move It) and The Beatles.

Throughout these years he was also associated on occasion with another “Old Boy”, Tony Osborne, whose own musical career is yet another Cambridge success story. In later years his musical virtuosity was called on for many sessions of film music with more and more television work. Some of the music is still being played today, Themes to Last of the Summer Wine, Rising Damp, Hancock’s Half Hour, and numerous others.

He fully retired some 20 years ago, having moved to West Wratting just outside Cambridge. Peggy, his wife of 43 years tragically died at this time but he continued with occasional appearances at Baroque concerts in Thaxted church until arthritis and the ability to carry a bass any longer forced him to finally take the tension out of his bow.

He will be remembered as one of the finest Double Bass players of his era, a consummate professional and always a staunch Cantabrigian for he loved Cambridge.

He was a long-standing member of the Old Cantabrigian Society. Chris was struck down by Alzheimers all too young and has been, for many years, severely disabled by this dreadful illness. As his family comment “Our sadness is only tempered by the thought that at last his long ordeal is over”.

His funeral service will be held on Monday 11 June at 1.45pm in the East Chapel at Cambridge City Crematorium. His family request that flowers should be from the family only but donations to the Alzheimers Society would be greatly appreciated. Cheques, made payable to the Society, can be sent to Harry Williams and Sons, Funeral Directors, 83 Victoria Road Cambridge CB4 3BS (Tel: 01223 359480)

His family also welcome those Society members who remember Chris, for refreshments afterwards at The Cambridge Lodge Hotel 139 Huntingdon Road Cambridge CB3 0DQ (Tel: 01223 352833)
